Why IITs should be closed.

IITs are a colossal waste of tax payer money. A private engineering college is set up at 50 crore rupees(vs 2000 crores for an IIT) and has an annual budget of 5 crores(200 crores for an IIT).

The syllabus for the private college and the IIT is the same.

The number of students graduating is the same

The IITs intake is brilliant school pass outs who clear the grueling JEE one of the most competitive entrance exams on the planet. These bright kids would do as well in any college and industry, but IITs shamelessly take credit for their business leadership providing alumnii.

Private colleges' conduct their curriculum with the usual rigor and accountability of the private sector and though their intake is of very modest caliber students, the value addition is so huge that these kids give IITians a run for their money in professional life.

IIT staff are bureacrats masquerading as academicians and it is no wonder they seek similar scales of pay and perks...

If India wants to quickly spread affordable higher technical education, we should close down all the IITs, auction their prime properties and use the 100,000 crores rupees generated to start up new private sector engineering colleges or aid existing private sector colleges to refurbish their infrastructure. The 3000 crores rupees saved in annual running expenses should be used to give 300,000 scholarships of 1lac rupees each to meritorious students studying in private colleges.

I hope someone can pass this on the Kapil Sibal and ask that fat well meaning guy to use his brains for the country's lasting good..
