Should the private sector in India have reservations for disadvantaged sections of society?...A very serious question

Many years ago, the government proposed to privatize BALCO a company located in the town of Korba...The workers of course expectedly rose up in arms...

What was surprising was that the whole town including subsistence small time traders like street hawkers and flea market shop keepers observed a bandh for several days to protest against the Government move. Unlike the pampered and protected public sector employees of BALCO these poeple had nothing to lose, but still were apprehensive enough to support the workers' cause.

The Private sector in India is still seen as alien to common man's aspirations...it seemingly acts in what is perceived just the opposite of inclusive behavior. A good example is the reservation issue. For some reason reservations in India are applicable only to the Government and Public sector. Why the differentiation? To make matters worse, Captains of Industry, some of them well kown and widely respected time and again come out strongly against the idea of extending reservations to the Private sector with arguments like merit ought not to be sacrificed thereby insinuating that merit is somehow a monopoly of the higher castes of society...

Business leaders must recognize that all Indians are truly and equally gifted and the only differences lie in differences in opportunity...the caste system is an absolutely artificial evil conception.

This subject constitutes a golden opportunity for the Private sector to strike at the image of the life blood sapping Government sector as a friend of the under priviledged. Nobody seems to think so far ahead.

The business leaders of India are cocooned in their little world of supply chains and profitability...they need to grow beyond that and become harbingers of true change....in a short span of time they would discover that all the unseen fetters that have been holding them back would fall apart and they would race ahead to take their and India's rightful position in the world...
