Was India's Industrial growth under British Raj really bad?

It seems India was one of the fastest Industrial Growth stories in the world from 1880 to 1947, for almost 70 continuous years. If that rate had continued, India would have been as prosperous and developed as Europe and US today. After 1947 India swiftly lost its place and is today counted amongst the poorest countries in the world. It has been looking better for the past 10 years or so, but who knows when things will relapse...

Part of the reason for the recent turnaround may be that it was IT and software services driven and the government bureaucrats did not initially understand how to choke these fancy sectors...but now they would have "come up to speed" and we may soon see "innovative" suffocation mechanisms from the government to reign in our growth back to where it was for most of post independence period...
