How India relentlessly chases wealth while remaining truly ascetic at heart...look at Narayanmurthy...has fiercely competed and won all the wealth one can aspire for but has a modest lifestyle...

Recently a minister decried "vulgar salaries" in the corporate world. This is a cultural issue actually....East Asia used to have very little disparity in incomes both within companies and in countries as a whole and yet were very fiercely competitive globally...in fact it can be argued that Japan lost some of her cutting edge competitiveness after her culture started getting adulterated by Western value systems of "hire and fire" for instance...

The West has always had extremes...the "haves" and the "have-nots"...in the Protestant Anglo-Saxon world, not having wealth is seen as a sign of weakness of character...no wonder "Hitlers" who want to remove all weaklings happen in such cultures...

But cultures cannot be dictated by governments...people have to find their own equilibrium....whatever suites their tastes...I guess India is always confused about such esoteric issues...we garishly worship gods of wealth but also claim descent from ascetic sages who had no worldly possessions and happily lived frugal lives in forest clearings...
